Notable Incidents

Several casualties in confinement have been publicly known, such as a senior healthcare leader who perished in prison after 120 days in detention.

A detainee incarcerated with the deceased testified that he was led to the exercise area by correctional officers shortly before his demise, visibly injured and naked from the waist down. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who perished in detention in Israel stay unnamed. The prison service and military gave investigators with the number of casualties in confinement, and minimal other details including the location where they died, but not the prisoners’ names.

Recognition Difficulties

Regarding 21 occurrences, mainly people from Gaza, investigators were unable to correlate the limited information given by officials to a casualty documented by human rights groups, by means of testimony from released detainees or coverage in the press.
