Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
